The lights will be switched off, starting this June, on one of Kampala’s most popular theme nights, Saturday Night, that has had partygoers let their hair down and groove the night away for decades at Guvnor Club in Industrial Area, Kampala.

The announcement was made on the club’s official social media pages and confirmed by one of the officials, drawing nostalgia among party animals on social media that had taken to the dancefloors in the swanky club right from the 1970s when it was Kololo Club, through the 1990s when it was Angenoir Discotheque before rebranding to Guvnor in 2010.

The development was attributed to the sharp drop in business.

"But the club will still remain open to business on Saturdays for private parties and will keep the other popular nights such as “Friday Night Live with Afrigo (Every last Friday of the month), Oldies Night (Every First Friday of the month), Guvnor FRIjAY with Aka Dope and others," the statement read.

Few can forget when Guvnor set the nightlife mood bar high in 2010 after rebranding from Ange, by introducing hi-tech lighting system, overall white theme and multi-coloured carpets among others that made the club a must-attend, and compelled others nightspots at the time to take note.

The club has given fun-lovers great DJs and nights that have created many fond memories and were quick to give their reactions on social media.

A one @BradleyCarl256 posted: “Damn, another nice place slowly losing its life until its (sic) completely gone.”

Another known as Kaweesi Jeremiah posted: “This is so sad. I have lots of memories in this place from way back when it was still Angenoir. As for the best club MC Uncle Moseso, I am going to miss your style.”

Another one known as @SoundsLikePree went: “COVID-19 really crippled club businesses, consumer behaviour shifted and things were never the same again. Ugandans love a rebrand though, that’s what (they) may be missing. Many on social media attributed Guvnor’s entrance fee charges as one of the reasons the club’s night faced dwindling numbers in these tough times.

One user known as @ntegejonas posted on the club’s official X, “You guys had survived for long even, no bar has ever charged entrance fees and it survives.”

Another one known as @Rick15256167 posted, “Guvnor’s management deserves this and more. They failed to adapt. Other places charge no entrance fee, just provide a great ambiance and you guys thought you are special? We will see you on the other side.”
