At least 25 health training Institutions have received Personal Protective Equipment worth sh1b to help them in their day-to-day learning process.

Mary Achuma, the Principal Kaabong College of Nursing and Midwifery, said the donation is a relief to the institution since most of the students cannot afford to buy masks yet they are needed, especially during this period of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The equipment was donated by Finca Uganda to Health Training Institutions through the Ministry of Education and Sports.

‘’The donation is a relief to our college. At the Health Training Institutions, we use real materials so we need such equipment,’’ said Achuma.

Sister Jane Francis Namuddu, the Principal of St. Michael Lubaga hospital training school, said the donation comes at the right time when the school was fighting to see that they meet its priorities which include masks on their budget.

COVID-19 statistics

The permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Education and Sports, Ketty Lamaro, said the masks were provided during COVID-19 to support the COVID-19 response.

"The masks will support training Institutions in form of basic protective equipment they need in their day-to-day learning," she added.

Lamaro commended the Minister of Education and Sports and First Lady Janet Kataaha Museveni who initiated this process of seeking support for the COVID-19 response.

She committed to reaching out to all other Health Training Institutions in the country with PPE support.

‘’We appreciate the COVID-19 cases have gone low, but these masks are basic protective equipment for our health trainers,’’ Lamaro said.

Dr. Safinak Kisu, the Commissioner of Health Education and Training, said the masks will also safeguard students from getting infections.

She, however, said the training institutions are faced with challenges of understaffing, limited infrastructure, inadequate equipment and limited funding.

James Onyutta, the managing Director of Finca Uganda is optimistic that the one million masks will have a great impact on the training institutions.

The training Institutions which received the PPE include Gulu College of Health Sciences, Butabika School of psychiatric nursing, Mengo school of Nursing and midwifery, Nsambya, Mulago school of nursing and midwifery, Jinja medical laboratory and Kaabong College of Nursing among others.
