70 arrested in Kira over attacks using pavers

The joint security forces in an operation carried out on Sunday, May 5, 2024, in Wakiso district, arrested 70 suspects linked to the increased spate of robberies using pavers and stones in the area.

Kampala Metropolitan Police deputy spokesperson Luke Owoyesigyire said the suspects were arrested in the wake of intelligence-led operations in Kira municipality and some were detained at the Namugongo Police Division.

He said the operations were carried out as a response to escalating incidents in the area in which thugs attacked people using pavers.

“In response to the escalating incidents of paver/stone throwing by criminal elements along the northern bypass (Kira Road) and in the vicinities of Kimbejja, Kyaliwajala, and Namugongo (Kira division), a co-ordinated joint operation was swiftly initiated. This operation, orchestrated in collaboration with local councils, parish intelligence security officers, Gombolola Intelligence Security Officers (GISO), Defence Intelligence and Security (DIS), Uganda Peoples Defence Forces (UPDF), Crime Intelligence and area Police, aimed to curb the menace posed by these miscreants,” Owoyesigyire said.

He revealed that as a result of diligent efforts, a total of 70 suspected criminals were apprehended on Sunday May 5th May 2024.

“Among them, 15 were captured along the Northern Bypass and are currently being held at Kiira Road Police Station, while 55 were apprehended from areas including Naalya, Kyaliwajjala, Kimbejja, and Namugongo, and are detained at Kiira Division. These individuals are currently undergoing screening and appeared in court, today Monday May 6th 2024,” he added.

Owoyesigyire said this decisive action underscores security commitment to maintaining peace and security in our communities.

“As we gear up for the forthcoming Martyr's Day activities scheduled for June 3, 2024, we will continue to conduct targeted operations to ensure the safety and well-being of all residents,” he said.
