Residents of Ngora district are on the verge of starving due to lack of food following the prolonged drought that has left the first session crops dry.

The food security situation report released Wednesday indicates that over 33,000 people in Ngora sleep on empty stomachs, a situation that requires urgent government intervention of food relief.

The report signed by the chief administrative officer, Lawrence Wadada, and copied to the MPs in Ngora, the LC5 and RDC, shows that residents only have food to take them through two weeks.

The report conducted two weeks ago unearthed the worrying situation that puts 80% of the population in Ngora at risk of death.

Mike Odongo lo’Asio, the LC5 Ngora said that though the situation cuts across the most vulnerable communities are the elderly, people living with HIV/AIDs, the disabled, children and breastfeeding mothers.

"It is challenging to lead a hungry community noting that cases of domestic violence have also increased," said Odongo.

The seeds that operation wealth creation gave to the people of Ngora such as cassava cuttings, maize and citrus seedlings, all dried up.

Odongo is calling on NAADS to consider distributing those seeds once rains return.

According to meteorology experts, rains are expected in Teso towards the end of this month.
