The inaugural Cassava- Rice Golf Challenge lit up the isolated National Crops Resources Research Institute in Wakiso district.

To the golfers, it was good for them to clean off the rust after several months without golf due to the Coronavirus pandemic, but to the organisers, it was the start of a new journey to rebuild the golf club that had reduced to a mere golf training academy.

According to club captain Collins Bulafu, the event lived up to expectations and they are going to start preparing for next year.

“Fifty-six participants turning up for the inaugural event is proof that next year, it will be bigger and better. We appreciate that participants and caddies all respected the covid protocols,” Bulafu said.

The event was intended to promote awareness about the agricultural researches conducted at the institute.

The institute is one of the six national agricultural research institutes in the country.

It is mandated to conduct, carry out research and knowledge generation on crops such as legumes, cassava, maize, rice, and sweet potatoes.

Besides making it annual, Bulafu added it is time to rebuild the club so that instead of just being a breeding hub for other clubs, it turns into a fully competitive club producing top golfers.

“We have been a training ground for golfers. They come to train and when they are good, they go to other clubs, but we want to change that,” the club captain added.

Cassava team captain Emmanuel Wamimba was impressed with the organisation and added that event helped them to restore their swinging abilities ahead of the golf calendar activities.
