Top banking and insurance executives gathered at the Serena Hotel in Kampala yesterday to bid farewell to Varghese Thambi, the outgoing CEO and managing director of DTB Uganda.

The event, attended by officials from the Bank of Uganda led by deputy governor Michael Atingi-Ego, as well as representatives from the Uganda Bankers Association and top DTB customers, marked the end of an era for Thambi, who has steered the bank through a period of significant growth and transformation.

According to DTB Group CEO, Nasim Mohamed, Thambi’s tenure registered several achievements for the group, including the expansion of the bank’s branch network, the introduction of cutting-edge digital banking solutions, and a strong commitment to corporate social responsibility.

“I would like to extend my heartfelt gratitude to Thambi who has served as CEO of DTB Uganda for the past 17 years. He served all these years with me. Thambi is a beautiful person with a kind heart and I say this from the bottom of my heart. I enjoyed working with him,” she told the audience.

As guests raised their glasses in a toast to Thambi, they also extended a warm welcome to Godfrey Sebaana, who brings a wealth of experience and expertise to his new role.

Thambi said Sebaana “is a perfect replacement” to lead the bank citing his extensive experience in the banking sector.

“Sebaana joins DTB about 5 years less compared to my joining. I request the customers to support him in growing the DTB further,” he said.

Atingi-Ego said under Thambi’s guidance, DTB achieved remarkable growth by expanding its network from three to 37 branches nationwide, three cash collection centers, 56 automated teller machines (ATM), 22 deposit collection machines and 939 bank agents.

“Thambi ensured that DTB remains innovative and continuously introducing tailored products and services to meet the needs of the evolving of the clientele thereby strategically positioning the bank in the industry,” he said.

As the evening drew to a close, guests departed with fond memories of Thambi’s tenure and a sense of excitement for the future under Sebaana’s leadership.
