Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) on Monday continued inspecting commercial arcades and malls in the Central Business District after closing 68 buildings for failure to meet Standard Operating procedures (SOPs).

At least 73 arcades and malls were cleared to reopen after President Yoweri Museveni lifted the 42-day covid-19 lockdown.

The KCCA enforcement teams were also on the ground to fight with the increasing number of vendors and hawkers in the city, confiscating items spread all over, but many would play hide and seek and return as soon as the enforcers left.

Kikuubo Lane, Namirembe Road, Mini Price, Ben Kiwanuka Street and Luwum were again jammed with vendors and hawkers, causing traffic jam in downtown Kampala.

The Kampala minister, Hajat Minsa Kabanda said that inspection of the buildings would be a continuous exercise and warned arcade owners against flouting the SOPs as set by the Ministry of Health. She said they will go ahead to close any building that will be found to have failed to comply.

On Monday, the streets were jammed with crowds of people. Kikuubo Lane, in particular, was congested with traders shopping for various items and vendors who kept on running away from law enforcers and coming after they had left.
