Auditors have expressed dissatisfaction with the current law under which only accountants are allowed to practice as auditors in Uganda.

Speaking to New Vision on the sidelines at the 17th Annual National Audit Conference 2023 held at Speke Resort Munyonyo on Friday, Hussein Isingoma, the President of the Institute of Internal Auditors (IIA - Uganda) said that the if the law is amended, all professionals can train and practice auditing.

“We wish for the amendment of the law to allow heads of the internal audits outside accountancy, currently the law only allows accountants. Internal audit can be practiced with mixed skills in another profession,” he said.

Isingoma said that the sector is facing challenges where private organizations and some government entities have failed to embrace it.

“Private and government entities have not embraced the services of auditing. It is also facing low funding, low training, and remuneration gaps,” he added.

Isingoma argued that organizations where internal audits are embraced experience growth and better service delivery.

The president of auditors explained that internal auditors stand for corporate governance principles of transparency, accountability, and better performance.
