Finance ministers from various African countries will starting today convene for a whole week in Zimbabwe from February 28 to March 5, 2024, to discuss various pertinent issues concerning their economies.

While addressing journalists recently about the conference, ambassador Claver Gatete, Executive Secretary of the Economic Commission for Africa (ECA), and Zimbabwe Minister of Finance, Economic Development and Investment Promotion, Mthuli Ncube, said it was timely, considering the impact of the multiple crises in Africa, including the cascading impacts of climate change and the war in Ukraine in a post-Covid era.

The fifty-sixth conference, organized by ECA, is being held under the theme of Financing the Transition to Inclusive Green Economies in Africa: Imperatives, Opportunities and Policy Options.

According to a statement from the ECA, the conference will consist of the preparatory meeting of the Committee of Experts of the Conference of African Ministers of Finance, Planning, and Economic Development, followed by the ministerial segment of the Conference.

In addition to considering the statutory matters of the Commission, the Conference is one of the premier platforms on the continent for dialogue and exchange of views among African ministers responsible for finance, planning, and economic development and governors of central banks on issues pertinent to the development agenda of Africa.

Experts are expected to come up with solutions on how Africa can address the never-ending economic shocks, how well to implement the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), and reform the global financial architecture for the benefit of the continent.

In the recent past, calls for an international finance architecture that is fair have increasingly gained traction during conferences of African countries.
