Veteran singer and Afrigo Band member Joanita Kawalya has urged musician groups and platforms, including Uganda Musicians Association (UMA), Uganda National Musicians Federation (UNMF), to shun division and embrace unity.

During her performance at the Jam Session organized by UNMF to celebrate her on April 16, 2024 at A'Lure Hotel and Suites in Mutundwe, the legendary singer said all the groups that appear to be divided are fighting for one common cause - elevating the status of music and musicians in the country, and, therefore, they should be working together.

"Why are we so divided when we're all fighting for the same cause? I call upon all leaders of musician groups to come together, unite, and fight for the same goal. Instead of dividing us, you should focus on bringing us together," she said.

Kawalya also criticised the media for perpetuating musician's disunity and disagreements, thereby exacerbating existing divisions.

She appealed to the media to collaborate with musicians and other creative industries to promote the art and culture sector, within which journalists also play a role.

Kawalya thanked UNMF for organising the event to celebrate her, describing it as an honor to be recognised by peers in the industry and referring to it as a gesture of respect.

"When Hanson Baliruno (UNMF chief whip) told me they wanted to celebrate me, I didn't initially welcome the idea. But upon reflection, I realised it was a sign of respect and love from fellow musicians, so why not embrace it?" she said.

Kawalya is renowned for her instrumental work with Afrigo Band, adding her soft voice to songs such as Jim Wange, Teri Mubi, Suzana and Mpa Eddembe.
