Soroti Regional Referral Hospital authorities say they record between 150 to 200 children with malaria every month.

According to Dr Kenneth Odongo, some children are brought to the facility in critical condition, while presenting with symptoms such as black water; a condition that causes urination of blood.

The revelations came in light of Uganda joining the rest of the world to commemorate World Malaria Day (April 25, 2024).

Odongo said he is disappointed by some parents who spend time on self-medication and only bring their children to the hospital when the situation is out of hand.

Caroline Asako a pediatric nurse at the hospital rebuked some mothers for not completing treatment prescribed by medics.

World Malaria Day is an occasion to highlight the need for continued investment and sustained commitment to malaria prevention.

It was instituted by World Health Organisation member states during the World Health Assembly of 2007.
