Police in the Kampala Metropolitan Area say they have arrested a Chinese national over the illegal sale of army equipment.

Jin Yungung, 33, was arrested on May 3, 2024, following an intelligence-led operation led by the territorial Police at Kampala Metropolitan North.

By the time of his arrest, the suspect was a resident of Ganda village, Nansana Municipality, Wakiso District, Luke Owoyesigyire the deputy Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesman, said Monday.

"Mr. Yungung was found operating a shop involved in the illegal sale of government property, specifically army uniforms, shoes, and gloves. His shop, located at Kasaga Shop No.14, was targeted following intelligence reports," he added in a statement.

He said during the operation, significant quantities of military equipment were seized from the suspect's premises, including uniforms resembling those of the UPDF and SFC.

He said preliminary investigations revealed that the suspect was able to acquire the items in collaboration with an individual known only as Frank, who is allegedly affiliated with the Special Forces Command (SFC).

"(It is Frank) who provided both the business idea and financing," Owoyesigyire said.

He added that the suspect admitted that some uniforms were sourced from Somalia through Frank, who transported them to Nansana for distribution.

According to the Owoyesigyire, the suspect is believed to have entered Uganda as a tourist, renewing his visa periodically by travelling to neighbouring countries.

He said Yungung is currently detained at Kawempe Police Station pending further interrogation, along with efforts to locate and question Frank.
