The Uganda Canada Convention & Tourism Business Expo 2025 edition, held recently in Toronto, Canada, has been a key investment bridge.

The July 11-13, 2025, event organised by the Uganda Canadian Diaspora Network, was a hallmark that saw both in-person attendees at the Courtyard by Marriott Downtown Toronto and virtual participants through live streaming on TV.

The event was an important avenue for fostering investment, trade and cultural ties between Canada and Uganda.

This spotlighted the vast potential within the Ugandan economy for diaspora engagement. The opening ceremony was an elaborately crafted structure, with Ugandan Diaspora Network founder Ronnie Mayanja at the helm as organising committee chair.

In the keynote address, Uganda’s High Commissioner to Canada, Alan Kajik, explained the robust opportunities awaiting investors in Uganda.

He reiterated the Government’s commitment to protecting investors through a dedicated one-stop centre at the Uganda Investment Authority (UIA).

Kajik encouraged attendees to explore the UIA website for a diverse portfolio of bankable projects. The envoy cited promising sectors, such as fish processing and recycling plants.

“Uganda is a prime investment destination, due to its conducive business environment and abundant natural resources,” Kajik said.

Immigration attaché for Ottawa Catherine Lillian Amalo provided essential information on immigration-related services.

She also announced an upcoming mass enrolment for national identity cards, further streamlining processes for Ugandans abroad.

Real estate, finance

The event delved into various investment opportunities, with a strong focus on real estate and financial security.

Janet Mugume, the manager of real estate at the National Social Security Fund (NSSF), showcased its role in long-term security, managing investments for over three million members.

Mugume highlighted NSSF’s extensive land holdings across Uganda and its impressive real estate developments.

He also introduced ‘Smart Life Flexi’, a savings option for medium-term goals, and assured the diaspora of the ease and security of retrieving their savings.

Former Uganda Law Society president Andrew Kasirye, who is a shareholder at Pearl Marina Uganda, also presented their exciting real estate projects.

He illustrated the vibrant growth in Uganda’s property sector. Sikander Kassam, the chief executive officer of Reportage Properties, provided valuable insights into property development and investment strategies.
