The Uganda Police Force on Thursday, February 20, 2025, released a tentative burial program for the late Boniface Aron Okoth Ogola who was the Inspector General of Police between 1981 – 1985.
Late Ogola passed away on Friday 14, 2025, at Nakasero Hospital at the age of 85 years.
Last week, President Yoweri Museveni granted the former IGP an official burial scheduled on Sunday in Tororo.
An official burial is granted by the President to persons with extraordinary performance and government meets all the costs incurred during the burial process.
The deceased is also accorded a gun salute.
Funeral program:
Friday, February 21, 2025: Funeral service at All Saints Cathedral Nakasero from 9:00 am
Friday, February 21, 2025: overnight vigil at family Tororo home at Mile 2 along Mbale road.
Saturday, February 22: Funeral service at his home on Mbale road at 10:00 am.
Saturday, February 22: Vigil at ancestral home in Mbula, in Petta Sub-County in Tororo district.
Sunday, February 23rd: Funeral service at 10:00 am at ancestral home in Mbula.
Sunday, February 23rd: Burial at 2:00 pm at ancestral home in Mbula.
In a post announcing the news on social media platform X, Police said the former Police chief's "leadership and contributions to the Uganda Police Force will be remembered".
"The IGP Abas Byakagaba has extended condolences to the family and ensured that the late IGP is honoured in a manner fitting his legacy," Police said.
Ogola fled to exile when the second Obote regime fell in 1985 and returned back home (Uganda) in 2009 after 24 years in Pennsylvania, US.
After his return, Ogola spoke of his relief upon being back home.
"East or west, home is the best. Out there life is not that pleasant. I am happy to be home and I am proud of my country," he said at the time.
"I thank you for all the assistance you rendered to my family. I thank President Yoweri Museveni and the Vice-President for facilitating my return."
Ogola also said he had seen a lot of development in the country, including tremendous traffic growth in Kampala city.
