The elites who hail from the Kigezi sub-region have been warned of a huge task if any of them is to measure up to Justice George Kanyeihamba.
Addressing mourners in Kampala on Friday, Prof. George Mondo Kagonyera, the former Makerere University chancellor, described the late Kanyeihamba as a very smart fellow.
“This man was extremely clever, and that was part of his problem because he knew he was a smart man, and sometimes it is dangerous because you would want everybody to appreciate that is what you are,” Kagonyera said.
Kagonyera was one of the mourners who commiserated with the family of the former Supreme Court Judge at his home in Buziga, Kampala suburbs.
Kanyeihamba, who died on July 14, is scheduled to be buried on July 29.
“Prof. Kanyeihamba was a typical Mukiga; he never lost his roots at all to the extent that if you came to his house, you would eat the traditional Bakiga food,” Kagonyera said.
Kanyeihamba was born on August 11, 1939. In his lifetime, he held many powerful offices in government and the judiciary. A celebrated lawyer, author, and politician, he served as: attorney general, cabinet minister, a judge, member of parliament, among other responsibilities.
He also served as the chair of the legal committee of the Constituent Assembly that made the 1995 Constitution.
In 1997, he became a member of the Supreme Court of Uganda and retired in November 2009.
The legal mind had earlier served as minister of commerce, minister of justice, and attorney-general in the Museveni government.
Kanyeihamba was one of the three Supreme Court justices who ruled that the re-election of President Museveni in 2006 was fraudulent enough to be nullified.
