As the New Vision Education Expo entered its third and final day, Vision Publishing continues to invite you to their stall, where they are offering a variety of books for primary and secondary school education.

The expo is happening at the Uganda Institute of Information and Communications Technology (UICT) in Nakawa, Kampala.

The fair has been designed to bring all actors in the education sector in one place to share opportunities and knowledge exchange so as to contribute to its recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic related shocks.

Vision Publishing, a brand of Vision Group (the organisers of the expo), develops, prints and distributes books for upper primary and lower secondary curriculums across Uganda.

“We have structured content that is well-graded and logically-presented from simple to complex subject matters, with illustrations from local materials and descriptions, experiments and activities,” says Eric Muyanja (below, extreme right), Vision Publishing’s sales supervisor.

He says all their books have content that has generic and essential life skills and values.

They also publish cross-cutting issues such as climate change and information communications technology (ICT) that is able to make one a well-rounded and patriotic individual, who is competent.

The books available for upper primary include;

- Integrated Science Learner’s Book
- Studies Learner’s Book for Primary Five and Six
- Mathematics Learner’s Book
- Social Science for Primary Seven

Some of the lower secondary books include;

- Technology and Design
- Physical Education
- Nutrition and Food Technology
- Art and Design books for Senior One
- Kiswahili, Agriculture, Entrepreneurship, Islamic Religious Education, Literature in English and others.

All these books, Muyanja says, are available at all bookshops across the country and they range from sh20,000 to sh30,000 basing on the coverage of the content.

Denis Ssemukasa, the planning and operations manager of Vision Publishing, says their books are learner-centred and competence-based, written in line with the Government’s objective of education that builds a credible citizen.

“A learner who uses Vision Publishing books will be triggered to desire more of what they are studying with an intention of understanding a topic, not just to cram information. In other words, our books focus on knowledge application,” he observes.

Ssemukasa maintains that the books have been written in a manner that equips learners with core competences as the teacher offers guidance, making the lessons engaging and friendly.

“We are confident that any school that adopts these books in their teaching practice will ably equip learners with the much-needed 21st skills that will make their success in life possible.”

He further notes that through a contract with the education ministry, Vision Publishing has committed to design content that is age appropriate and not heavily loaded with information to allow learners to discover with the available information as well as the surrounding environment.

About the curriculum

The Government rolled out the new lower secondary education curriculum in 2020 with an aim of meeting the learner’s needs, especially in regards to skills, training and enhancement.

The National Curriculum Development Centre (NCDC) has made adjustments in taught subjects at the lower secondary level. For example, teaching subjects have been reduced from 43 to 21. Schools will teach 12 subjects at Senior One and Two, out of which 11 will be compulsory while one will be optional.

Under the new curriculum, teachers compile the learner’s achievements under the formative assessment in the four-year cycle, find an average score and submit to the Uganda National Examinations Board (UNEB) to contribute 20% in the final national examinations grading.

Subjects like Mandarin have been added to the menu of foreign languages in addition to Kiswahili, Physical Education and Entrepreneurship have been made compulsory for all students in Senior One and Two.

Some of the expo sponsors include Stanbic Bank, Directorate of Industrial Training (DIT), Vision Publishing, the Institute of Information and Communication Technology (UICT), Pepsi and the National Identification and Registration Authority (NIIRA).
