The Namasagali College Alumni Association has partnered with Busoga Kingdom in a tree planting initiative dubbed "Greening Busoga."

The initiative, which is aimed at conserving the environment at Kyabazinga’s Igenge Palace is championed by the association, led by chairperson Maureen Mwagale.

Over 20 alumni planted trees outside the palace in Bugembe, Jinja city and were joined by Eng. Patrick Batumbya. Batumbya was the chairperson organising committee of the Busoga Royal wedding.

During the launch of the initiative on Monday, Mwagale said they (Namasagali Alumni) were asked to donate towards the Kyabazinga wedding and she came up with an idea of their donation being a permanent one: Greening Busoga.

“We are going to plant trees along the Royal Mile which starts from Igenge Palace down to the main road. We shall make sure that these Palm trees on either side of the road grow,” Mwagale said, adding that they also requested permission from Busoga Kingdom to plant more trees around the kingdom.

“Greening Busoga is a charitable thing of giving back to communities, it is good for the environment and young generation to realise that it is not all about making money but to realise the voluntary and charitable heart people need to see and grow,” she said.

Association vice-chairperson Eric Byenkya said they are going to plant about 200 trees along the Royal Mile which is approximately 1.6 kilometres from the gate of the Palace towards the Jinja-Iganga highway.

“Busoga is one area that has been greatly affected by climate change, we are joining efforts to plant trees and to grow them because our objective is to see that we can green Busoga again,” Byenkya said.

Batumbya said they are happy to partner with the association, which has chosen to green Busoga in commemoration of the royal wedding.
