The Police in Kampala have apprehended two men suspected to be part of a notorious gang responsible for a series of street attacks and robberies targeting individuals carrying bags, phones, and other personal items.

The arrests were made following the review of CCTV footage that captured an incident on May 22, 2024, at around 8:00 pm. The footage, which the police described as "disturbing," shows a man walking along Ben Kiwanuka Street being violently assaulted.

A man kicked the victim in the face, causing him to fall to the ground. The assailant, joined by two accomplices, proceeded to rob the unconscious man of his bag and belongings while passers-by looked on without intervening.

The victim has been identified as Tomson Mugisha, 40, a resident of Kyebando, a suburb of Kampala. Mugisha was left unconscious by the brutal attack, which occurred in a busy area where, disturbingly, no one came to his aid.

In a statement released today, Thursday, Luke Owoyesigyire, the Deputy Spokesperson for the Kampala Metropolitan Police, confirmed the arrests and provided details on the incident.

“We have since established that during the incident, the victim was robbed of sh450,000, a bag containing important documents, keys, and a container,” Owoyosigyire stated.

He explained that the Central Police Station in Kampala has promptly opened inquiries into this attack, adding that so far, two suspects have been identified, and arrested, and are assisting the police with the ongoing investigations.

“We are actively working to trace and apprehend all individuals involved and ensure they are brought to justice,” he explained and urged members of the public to be vigilant and mindful of their surroundings.

He appealed to people to be vigilant and make an alarm if they witness any suspicious activities.

“Please do not hesitate to make an alarm or notify the police immediately, the public cooperation is essential in preventing such incidents and ensuring community safety,” he noted.
