On Tuesday, July 15th, Haruna Mulopa, the city education officer, said the donation was a timely intervention since several schools have buildings with dilapidated roofs, which posed health risks to both learners and teachers.

JINJA - Jinja city has received a total of 900 iron sheets to replace hazardous asbestos roofs in public schools.

The consignment from the Office of the Prime Minister received by the Jinja city education department will benefit several government-aided schools that have for years operated under dilapidated and potentially dangerous asbestos roofs.

On Tuesday, July 15th, Haruna Mulopa, the city education officer, said the donation was a timely intervention since several schools have buildings with dilapidated roofs, which posed health risks to both learners and teachers.

“We are grateful to the OPM for responding to our appeal. These iron sheets will help us re-roof at least eight primary schools in critical condition,” Mulopa said on Tuesday while commissioning renovated classrooms at Main Street primary school, which received  450 pieces.

Other beneficiaries include: Narambhai P/S with 200 pieces, Walukuba West P/S 150 pieces and Army Boarding primary school, which got 100 pieces.

Mulopa said they were only remaining with Wanyange Girls Secondary School, where they have engaged MMI Company to take over re-roofing under the ‘No asbestos’ project.

“As the city authorities, we have already written and handed over a report to the company so that they fully support the remaining school to help us get rid of the hazardous asbestos,” he said.

During the commissioning of re-roofed classrooms on Tuesday, MMI Steels Uganda, with the main factory in Jinja, handed over the refurbished administration block and school pavilion at Main Street Primary School under the ‘No Asbestos’ project aimed at improving learning conditions in the school.

Peter Alton Kasolo, the Jinja mayor, welcomed the support and called for further government intervention, especially in improving infrastructure in urban schools.

“Many school buildings have aged while others have no proper classrooms. We call upon the government and partners to prioritise the education sector,” he said.

Florence Nabukwasi, the Main Street P/S headteacher, hailed both the OPM and MMI company for the support towards the school.

However, she said they still need to create walkways for easy movement in the school.
Rajab Kitto, the Jinja city spokesperson, acknowledged receiving the iron sheets, adding that the World Health Organisation banned the use of asbestos for its health hazards.

Meddie Mbentyo, the chairperson of the Parents Teacher Association (PTA), lauded the initiative and expressed hope that it will enhance safety and learning environment for pupils.

Hassan Latif, the marketing executive of MMI Steels Uganda, was among the dignitaries at events.
