Tumeric, the golden spice, is used for facial masks. It is an ingredient in many skin care products but some prefer to use it directly mixed with other ingredients.

Zaitun Nasher, a professional beautician says that it has anti-inflammatory properties which are good for the skin.

"It also helps with acne, and spots and gives a glow," she says.

However, it can backfire if not used well and she cites some common mistakes made in usage.

Uneven application

Nasher says that when applying a turmeric mask, it shouldn't be done in a hurry.

"Use a brush or your hands and apply in every fold on the face. Between the eyes, along the nose ridge and elsewhere. If you apply unevenly, it leaves patches on the face and the skin looks unevenly toned," she says.

Leaving it on too long

Tumeric stains everything it comes into contact with, be it skin or cloth. So when applying it, Nasher advises caution, but moreso, limiting the time it sits on the face.

"Leave it on for not more than 20 minutes so that you do not become too golden in the face," she warns.

Inadequate rinsing

Masks are rinsed off with clean plain water. So when rinsing off a turmeric mask do so thoroughly, on every crevice of the face until there is no residue.

Unsightly patches will result from inadequate rinsing.

Early usage of soap

Nasher says that after using a turmeric mask it is advisable to avoid soap usage on the face for 24 hours.

"Soap dries the skin and downplays the softening effects of the mask, making the skin feel dry," she points out.

Too many ingredients

The saying that too many cooks spoil the broth also applies to face masks.

"Some people add everything in their mask from honey, avocado, oil, and lemon and it can do more harm than good. Limit your turmeric mask to two ingredients for better results," Nasher says.
