Female filmmakers that have made a mark on Uganda's industry

The film industry has traversed various challenges to emerge as a robust sector with improved picture quality, sound, and overall production excellence. This success owes much to the significant contributions of female filmmakers, whose dedication has played a pivotal role.

As we celebrate International Women's Day, New Vision acknowledges the outstanding women in the film industry. Here's a list of some notable figures:

Sister Dominica Dipio: A religious sister, filmmaker, author, and professor of literature and film at Makerere University. Her notable works include Mother-Centered Africa and Word Craft.

Mariam Ndagire: A multi-talented singer, entertainer, actress, playwright, film director, and producer. She has contributed to projects such as My Husband's Wife and On The Other Side.

Dr. Cindy Magara: A film director and academic with notable films like Tuko Pamoja and Windows of Hope. She serves as a lecturer of film studies and literature at Makerere University.

Eleanor Nabwiso: An actress, producer, and director known for her work on projects such as The Hostel and Beneath the Lies. She co-owns a film company with her husband, Mathew Nabwiso.

Irene Kulabako: A veteran actress, producer, director, and TV personality known for her roles in films such as Queen of Katwe and Beauty to Ashes.

Sarah Nsigaye: A well-known journalist, documentary filmmaker, and culture enthusiast serving as the Executive Director of Native Voices International.

Shakira Kibirige: A certified makeup artist and costume designer with accolades, including two Africa Movie Academy Awards.

Caroline Kamya: A British-Ugandan film director and producer involved in projects like Chips And Liver Girls and Imani.

Doreen Mirembe: An actress, producer, and founder of Amani, a film company, known for her roles in various films and TV series.

Other remarkable female figures in Uganda's film industry include Hadijah Nakanjako, Daphine Ampire, Maureen Nankya, Cleopatra Koheirwe, Joan Agaba, Kevin Johns Nabukenya, Diana Nabatanzi, Sarah Kisauzi, Angella Emurwon, Shevon Nsiimenta, Natasha Sinayobye, Shakirah Kankindi, Solair Munyana, Esther Bwanika, Cissy Nalumansi, Patience Asaba Katushabe, Judithana Namazzi, Ruth Nazzinda and Kemiyondo Coutinho.
