Hanging baskets with flowers is an easy way to beautify your home, especially the outdoors.

These baskets make a unique focal point for your balcony and garden.

However, Leonard Muzahura, a gardener says, it’s easy to have a hanging garden but to keep it looking healthy, you have to consider the type of baskets, plants and their maintenance.

“Don’t just pick any plant and hang. There are specific plants that do well in hanging baskets,” he says.

Plants such as petunias, sweet potato vines and geraniums do well in baskets. They cover and fill them with blooms. Some can even drop, adding beauty to the space. You can also plant spices and vegetables.

Christine Tendo, another landscaper advises trimming the plant so that it doesn’t get out of hand.

Aside from that, the pot, planter or basket should be light to reduce weight on the holding rope, string or chain. If the basket is heavy, the rope will break.

In addition to that, use a light planting medium. In other words, the soil should be well-mixed but light. For some plants like bromeliads and orchids, you can use moss, tree barks or wood chops.

Remember to water regularly as well. Tendo says, potted plants tend to dry out more quickly than those in the ground. But avoid overwatering much as on hot days, you might need to water twice every day. Irrigate until water begins to drip out of the bottom of the container.

Also, always fertilize the plants. You can use rabbit urine, plant soup or compost manure depending on plant requirements.
