Albertine region roads claimed most lives in 2023 — Police

ALBERTINE - The oil-rich Albertine region recorded the highest number of people who died in road crashes last year, new figures from the Traffic Police show.  

In their recently released 2023 performance report, Police say 374 people died and that this region contributed to 8% of all the 4,806 road traffic deaths.

This region’s Police was followed by Kampala Metropolitan Police (KMP) North, KMP East, and KMP South which registered 373, 333, and 331 fatalities, respectively.

The traffic performance report was compiled by the Uganda Police Force, providing the statistical summary of road traffic crashes reported from January 1 to December 31, 2023.

It says overall, Kampala Metropolitan registered over 1,000 fatalities representing 22% of all road traffic fatalities.

The Rwizi Region registered 322 fatalities, Wamala had 291, and Greater Masaka 262, while the Kidepo region registered the lowest number at 13.

In addition, the report said, the regions of Mt Moroto, north West Nile, Rwenzori east and Sipi reported 24, 52, 52, and 53 fatalities, respectively.

Kampala Metropolitan regions registered 5,249 people who sustained minor injuries, while West Nile and Rwizi regions had 997and 929 victims with serious injuries.
