Musician Jjumba Lubowa lands Hollywood Music Awards nomination

His song, Stress, an emotional track rooted in the kadongo kamu sound, was announced among this year’s global nominees.

Ugandan World Music/Contemporary musician Jjumba Lubowa Aligaweesa has been nominated in the World Music category of the Hollywood Independent Music Awards (HIMA), 2025.

His song, Stress, an emotional track rooted in the kadongo kamu sound, was announced among this year’s global nominees. The awards ceremony is set for July 30, at the Avalon in Hollywood, California, USA. 

The nomination marks a significant milestone for Aligaweesa and a rare international spotlight on Uganda’s traditional music scene.

“This nomination is a tribute to Uganda’s cultural sound. My music tells the story of our people, and now the world is listening,” said Jjumba, upon receipt of the nomination. 

Known for his deep lyrics and storytelling, Aligaweesa has built a strong following through songs like Esawa Yokufa, and Omuzadde Nomusomesa. His nominated track Stress, captures the everyday struggles faced by ordinary people, delivered with authenticity and cultural depth.

The Hollywood Independent Music Awards recognise outstanding independent artists from around the world across a variety of genres. Aligaweesa’s nomination places him among leading voices in world music, and he is expected to attend the red-carpet event in Los Angeles.
