Statistics from the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD,2014) indicate that 17% of children aged 0-14 years live in single-parent households worldwide and women head approximately 88% of them.

Raising a child without a partner can be financially difficult and socially isolating but single parenthood is a rewarding experience.

Many women continue to successfully navigate these waters. Marion Kareire is one of them as she narrates;

You too can raise your kids

I have been a single mother in two episodes, and I have toiled through on my own. I have three children; the firstborn is married followed by a son at university and the last born is 11years old.

The father of my first two kids died when they were still young, and I singlehandedly raised them.

Years later, I remarried, but after I gave birth to my son, we got misunderstandings and separated. Since then, I have been raising him alone. I have been through thick and thin given that he is autistic.

All along, I had been surviving on my business, but it recently hit a snag and collapsed. I am now home without an income, but I am working hard to get back on my feet.

To the single mothers, if you can find a job, move on and work hard for your children. Sometimes courts don’t help much.

It is possible to thrive as a single mother

I am Josephine Zhane, founder of Engender Girls Mentorship (EGM).

To young single mothers, first, acknowledge your situation and plan your next move by seeking help from trusted friends and family.

It is possible to thrive as a single mother if you take advantage of the available resources.

Being self-reliant is necessary, but do not fool yourself into thinking that you don’t need support from others. Create your support system.

You cannot change the past and the pain you have endured, but you can use the strength you gained to work towards making the best life for yourself and your child.

Also, finding a mentor who has been through it before is important.

She will encourage and guide you during the difficult seasons of life.

When you have to depend on a single income, budget and spend within your means.

Prioritize your resources and also, learn from your mistakes as you move on. It's okay to find love and love again but endeavour to make a better choice based on your previous mistakes.

This new partner can be a great 'father figure' for your child if you do it right.
