World Sickle Cell Day: Health ministry call for screening of couples

During the commemoration of World Sickle Cell Day on Wednesday, the health ministry called for pre-marital screening of sickle cells for couples intending to get married.

Dr Charles Olaro, the Director of Clinical Services, and also the chief guest, said this will allow couples to make informed decisions regarding their relationship.

He also said that they were training students in medical schools and Training Institutions on how to manage sickle cell when they finish school.

The National wide sickle cell survey 2014/2015 puts the National average of the trait at about 13.3percent and the disease at about 0.73%.

The celebrations happened at the health ministry headquarters in Nakasero, Kampala.
