Plea bargaining key in expediting court proceedings — Buteera

The Deputy Chief Justice Richard Buteera has said that plea bargaining is very beneficial in expediting court proceedings.

He made the remarks on Monday May 20, 2024 while receiving a team of nine internship students from Pepperdine University at the Court of Appeal, Judiciary Headquarters in Kampala. Present at the meeting was Justice Geofrey Kiryabwire.

Addressing the students, DCJ Buteera emphasized the longstanding friendship between Pepperdine University and the Judiciary of Uganda, highlighting the valuable contributions interns from the University have made in the past.

He noted the importance of collaboration and the exchange of ideas, particularly in areas like Plea Bargaining, which he said has proven to be beneficial in expediting court proceedings and ensuring fair outcomes.

Justice Buteera assured the interns that their journey with the Judiciary was just beginning and encouraged them to fully immerse themselves in the legal and cultural aspects of Uganda.

He handed the students to HW Harriet Ssali, the Registrar Supreme Court.

Scott Leist, East Africa Director Pepperdine Caruso Law, who is leading the team, expressed gratitude for the opportunity to partner with the Judiciary, acknowledging the mutually beneficial nature of the relationship. He emphasized the students' role as valuable assets and essential tools in serving the Judiciary.

Representing the internship students, Marcello Jones, an intern student expressed appreciation for the opportunity to learn from Ugandan legal professionals and be a part of the impactful work done by the Judiciary.

The students will have an opportunity to engage with the Principal Judge, Dr. Flavian Zeija, Heads of Divisions and other stakeholders within the Justice, Law, and Order institutions, gaining valuable insights into various aspects of legal practice in Uganda.

In attendance were; Hope Dease (Assistant Director of Advocacy and Marketing Pepperdine University), Prof Andrew Khaukha (Judiciary Technical Advisor), HW Rukundo Allen Owembabazi (Ag. Registrar Court of Appeal), and HW Gakyaro Allan (Personal Assistant to the DCJ).

The meeting was moderated by HW Dr. Mushabe Alex Karocho (Private Legal Secretary to the DCJ).
