THE new Wakiso district chairman, Matia Lwanga Bwanika, has promised to reconcile all rivaling groups.

Speaking after swearing in at the district headquarters on Wednesday, Bwanika said fights among councillors had hindered service delivery.

“Instead of monitoring the work of technocrats, some councillors are fighting for recognition. This has to stop. It is my responsibility to create an opportunity for all of us to forget our differences and redirect our energy towards improving the district,” he said.

Bwanika commended the outgoing district chairman, Ian Kyeyune, for his efforts towards the development of the district since its creation.

He pledged to exercise the basic principles of governance by encouraging people to participate in decision making at all levels.

He also vowed to fight those pushing for the split of the district.

“The manner in which the issue was introduced and handled left many unanswered questions, but our lawyers will handle the matter,” Bwanika said.

About 40 councillors also took oath during the ceremony, which was presided over by Mpigi Chief Magistrate Laundo Obbo. Twenty-two of the councillors belonged to the National Resistance Movement and 15 were of Democratic Party (DP). There was one independent councillor and one from the Forum for Democratic Change.

Prince David Wassajja, who was the chief guest, urged the councillors to sensitise residents on the importance of having pit-latrines in their homes. “I was shocked to learn that only 50% of the residents have pit-latrines. This is a serious problem,” he said.

Meanwhile, two Muslim leaders struggled for the microphone to lead the congregation in prayer at the beginning of the ceremony.

Sheikh Kassim Ssengonzi, who belongs to Mufti Zubair Kayongo’s faction, accused Ismael Ssebagaala of Mufti Ramathan Mubajje’s group, of hijacking the exercise.
