Uganda's table tennis ladies’ team has settled for a silver medal at the Eastern Africa Championships in Djibouti.

The team comprising Jeninah Nakawala and Judith Parvin Nangonzi from Nakasero Table Tennis Club who feature for Kibuli SSS and Shanitah Nangonzi of Mbogo High School lost to Mauritius 3-1 in the final on Sunday.

This has been a big achievement for the ladies’ team that finished in fourth place last year in Ethiopia.

The men’s team that was composed of Benjamin Achuma, Samuel Ankunda, and Imran Luwooza finished in third position after beating hosts Djibouti 3-0 in the playoffs to win the bronze medal.

Finishing 2nd and 3rd for both teams earned the country lots of vital points for the Olympic Games qualifiers, the All- Africa Games 2024 and Commonwealth Games 2026, according to the president of Uganda Table Tennis Association (UTTA), Robert Jjagwe.

In the individual events, Nakawala, Nangonzi, and Ankunda who finished among the top eight in the championship qualified for the Africa Senior Championships in Tunisia in September.

“We return home with two medals. Our Sincere thanks to the players. They were greatly disadvantaged to have travelled without a coach and also a last-minute approval due to lack of funds but they have secured some good medals for the country working as a close and united team,” Jjagwe noted.

Ethiopia, Kenya, Madagascar, Mauritius, Somalia, Sudan, Uganda, and Djibouti are the countries that participated in the championship out of the fourteen countries in the region.
