The security committee for Moroto district has imposed a 10-hour curfew covering the entire local government in a move which they said is to thwart security threats.
On July 17, 2025, the National Resistance Movement party will elect its flagbearers across the country ahead of the general elections in 2026.
On Wednesday, July 16, 2025, the Acting Resident District Commissioner, Moroto Justine Tuko, announced the curfew during a crisis meeting held at Moroto District Chambers Hall.
"The district security committee has decided to impose a curfew beginning at 7pm. These are some of the steps we have taken to ensure a peaceful election.
In the past three days, security night patrols forces had intercepted gangs wielding pangas and clubs.
Security personnel swung into action and arrested three of the suspects. By 7pm everyone should be indoors," said Tuko.
He appealed to the residents to respect the curfew to avoid arrest among suspects violating public peace.
“The curfew is intended to have a peaceful election, which may lead to the promotion of future freedoms,” Tuko observed.
Meanwhile, the RDC also appealed to the aspirants to embrace all the necessary steps for ensuring peaceful elections.
At least 17 movement candidates are vying for three directly elected Member of Parliament positions in Moroto district.
However, this includes, woman MP for Moroto district. Others are Members of Parliament for Matheniko and the Moroto Municipality.
The meeting was attended by the members of the Uganda police force, Uganda People’s Defence Forces, aspirants, agents and internal security officers.
