KATAKWI - Vice-President Jessica Rose Alupo Epel has officially been announced as the National Resistance Movement (NRM) party flag-bearer for the Katakwi District Woman Member of Parliament (MP) position.

Alupo secured 84,944 (88.8%) votes, while her closest rival, Angella Anuken, got 5,704 (6%) votes. Former District Woman MP and flag-bearer Violet Akurut Adome followed with 4,828 (5%) votes, while Cecilia Anyakoit received 139 votes, about 0.1%.

James Otilem, the NRM Katakwi district elections officer for Katakwi, announced Alupo's election at approximately 11:13pm.



After claiming victory, Alupo expressed her gratitude to the people of Katakwi, including candidates, voters, and agents, for their peaceful participation in the elections.

She noted that this reflects a high level of political maturity and sets a strong precedent for tranquillity, especially in contrast to other districts where unrest may have occurred.

Alupo encouraged all voters to maintain this positive spirit in future elections, emphasising the importance of focusing on constructive projects and programs rather than getting caught up in divisive issues.

She expressed her appreciation for the trust bestowed upon her and vowed to meet the expectations of her constituents.

Fred Omach, the deputy chairperson of the NRM Electoral Commission, highlighted their efforts to ensure free and fair elections, which he believes are crucial for maintaining unity within the party.

He urged NRM members to collaborate effectively to strengthen the party’s position and congratulated the vice president on her significant victory.

RDC Katakwi, Stephen Ilemukorit Okure, remarked on the significance of this election in the country.

He acknowledged a few minor challenges but noted that the process was more seamless compared to the 2020 NRM party primaries.

Ilemukorit called for unity among the people to respect their elected leaders and protect Katakwi. He urged both winners and losers to come together to foster the district’s development.



For Ngariam County, Peter Ogwang, the state minister for sports retained his NRM flag after garnering 35,076 votes, representing 89.4 percent and is followed by Daniel Mulalu, who scored 2,264 votes, representing 5.8 percent while Augustine Otuko got only 888 votes, representing 4.8 percent. 

Katakwi district is home to 629 NRM polling stations, while the nation boasts more than 70,000 polling stations overall.

Reflecting on the 2020 NRM Party primaries, Alupo had previously lost to Akurut, scoring 38,667 votes compared to Akurut's 48,671 votes.
