Despite ongoing network issues, the nomination process for candidates in Gulu City commenced smoothly.
Mike Juku, the Gulu city registrar of the Electoral Commission, confirmed that by 1 pm, ten candidates had completed their nominations for positions, including city councillors, division mayors, and the city mayor.
Juku, however, lamented that the persistent network problems have hampered the verification process of candidates' documents, potentially affecting the overall nomination timeline.
He issued a warning to aspiring candidates that those who begin campaigning before official approval risk having their candidature terminated.
Candidates are expected to start their campaigns in November.
Richard Onencan, an independent candidate for the male youth councillor seat, reported that he was able to complete his verification successfully, although the network disruption caused delays.
At least two candidates have been duly nominated to contest for the Kwania District Chairperson’s seat ahead of the 2026 general elections.
They are Patrick Ogwang Obia, the Chawente Sub-County V Councillor (UPC party), and George K.K. Akaca (NRM party).
Meanwhile, the District woman council’s seat has attracted four nominees, including Dorcas Wangari, Joan Acio Etin for Aduku town council, Betty Akok, and Lucy Aero Otim for Nambieso Sub-County.
For the directly elected district councillors, Martin Okech (NRM) and Darius Acami have been nominated for Aduku town council, Betty Akok for Nambieso Sub-County, and Douglas Abura for Inomo Sub-County, among others.
The candidates were nominated by Sarah Keziah Birungi, the Kwania District Returning Officer.
Addressing the media shortly after nomination, Wangari, the incumbent Councillor V for Aduku town council, pledged to improve service delivery, focusing on constructing Aduku main market, improving the status of Aduku Health Centre IV, among others.
