Inspector General of Police (IGP) Abas Byakagaba has assured Ugandans that the security forces are fully prepared to safeguard the 2026 General Election.
Speaking in a statement issued Thursday, September 18, 2025, Byakagaba emphasised that the Uganda Police Force (UPF), working closely with sister security agencies and stakeholders, has undertaken deliberate measures to ensure the electoral process is conducted peacefully and securely.
“We have now entered a crucial stage in this electoral process as the Electoral Commission nominates candidates for the various elective positions. The nominations will be followed by campaigns across the country. UPF has undertaken deliberate measures towards securing the general elections,” Byakagaba said.
The Police Chief urged political actors and citizens to exercise their rights responsibly while respecting the rights of others, stressing that the country’s laws remain fully enforceable throughout the election period.
“All political activities must be within the confines of the law. Acts of electoral malpractice and activities that contravene traffic regulations, inciting violence, hooliganism, computer misuse, destruction of property and spreading false information will not be tolerated,” he warned.
Byakagaba further appealed to Ugandans to be “ambassadors of peace” and to resist manipulation by groups or individuals who might attempt to use them as instruments of violence.
“Your positive energy and creativity should be channeled towards building a better future,” he said, noting that Uganda has achieved sustained peace and continues to make progress in socio-economic transformation.
He also called for accurate and respectful reporting from the media, cautioning against misinformation and disinformation during the campaign period.
Reaffirming the Police’s commitment, the IGP said: “Once again, Uganda Police Force reaffirms its responsibility to safeguard the electoral process by working collaboratively with all stakeholders. Let us remain vigilant and guard against negative elements that may orchestrate criminality in the electoral activities. We are dedicated to maintaining open channels of communication.”
