“We must avoid colliding with one another, because we are all aiming in the same direction,” he said in Luganda.

Alliance for National Transformation (ANT) Presidential-flag-bearer
for the 2026 General Election, Maj. Gen. (rtd) Gregory Mugisha Muntu has appealed for unity amongst the Opposition.

He echoed this during his inaugural rally at Kawempe Ku Tano, a Kampala city suburb on Tuesday, September 30, 2025, where moments earlier, he had emphasised the need for fresh, clean leadership in steering the country to greater heights.

“We must avoid colliding with one another, because we are all aiming in the same direction,” he said in Luganda.

The comment came at the tail end of a rally that was graced by ANT party leaders, including Alice Alaso Asianut, Ambassador Edith Ssempala, Agaba Nelson and Sheikh Muhammad Ausi Katuramu.

Before holding a rally at Musajja Alumbwa zone, he went house to house mobilising votes, a new approach for this campaign. At the rally, he invited supporters to ask questions, which he answered openly.

Many questions centred on veterans who claimed they had not received their benefits long after serving.

The rally also witnessed a dramatic moment when a man, claiming to be a National Resistance Movement (NRM) supporter, confronted Muntu, questioning why he had abandoned the NRM and its leader President Yoweri Museveni, who had identified and mentored him from a young age.

Muntu responded by highlighting what he termed as the ills that drove his departure, including constitutional amendments to remove term limits and the shrinking of freedoms. Summing up, he sarcastically asked the NRM supporter why he had chosen to remain in the party while prominent figures like him were leaving.

On Thursday, October 2, 2025, Muntu’s campaign caravan will head to Mitooma district, the home to Deputy Speaker of Parliament Thomas Tayebwa and his [Muntu] bush war comrade, internal affairs minister Maj. Gen. (rtd) Kahinda Otafiire, as well as Rubirizi district on the same day.

This is Muntu’s second bid for the presidency, having contested the last general elections where he came fourth with 67,574 votes (0.65 percent). The election was won by President Yoweri Museveni, who garnered six million votes.

While his closest competitor, Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu aka Bobi Wine of the National Unity Platform (NUP) polled  3.6 million.

This time around, Muntu and six others, are plotting to dislodge President Museveni from the seat. The others are:

  • Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu (National Unity Platform - NUP)
  • Nathan Nandala Mafabi (Forum for Democratic Change - FDC)
  • Mubarak Munyagwa (Common Man's Party (CMP)
  • Elton Joseph Mabirizi (Conservative Party - CP)
  • Frank Bulira Kabinga (Revolutionary People’s Party - RPP)
  • Robert Kasibante (National Peasants Party - NPP)
