With a few days to the tip-off of the new National Basketball League (NBL) season, Stanbic Bank Uganda has offered sh360m to the Federation of Uganda Basketball League (FUBA).

However, the cash is going to come in three phases with FUBA entitled to sh120m annually for the next three years.

The sponsorship partnership between the two parties was announced at a press conference at Stanbic Bank Incubator Lower Kololo in Kampala on Thursday.

FUBA president Nasser Sserunjogi who was in the company of JKL Lady Dolphins point guard and  Gazelles captain Flavia Oketcho and Recheal Ainamatsiko, the newly elected Women's commissioner expressed gratitude upon confirming the partnership.

"Stanbic Bank is a big brand and when the two big entities come together, we expect the best in our league," he said.

"When you partner with a huge brand, it's an anchor to other brands which means, it motivates others to come on board. They are coming on board as official payment partners which means our fan's payments will be done through flexipay."

Stanbic Bank's head of communication, Kenneth Agutamba said the sponsorship is going to facilitate the growth of the Basketball League.

"Just like we are Uganda Cup partners, we also partner with Pirates Rugby Club. we are also extending support to basketball and this is a start. We know how the sport has struggled because it hasn't attracted many sponsors. We believe sponsorships are the only way we can build the actual potential of the sport," Agutamba said.

Gazelles captain Flavia Oketcho said such sponsorships give them confidence as players because it shows them the direction the sport is taking.

The new NBL season tips off this Sunday with defending champions City Oilers facing KIU Titans in the men's category while UCU will be taking on JKL Lady Dolphins at Lugogo
