Yumbe teacher collapses, drowns in running water

YUMBE - A teacher at Yumbe district-based Kuru Senior Secondary School has drowned after collapsing and falling into running rain water. 

The deceased, Gerald Waibi, who hailed from Kamuli district, is said to have been recently posted to the school and was teaching economics and divinity on top of other assignments at the school.

Kuru Senior Secondary School deputy headteacher Abdul Yahaya said the teacher had left the school on Tuesday, March 28, 2023, afternoon when it was coming to rain hoping to rush to his rental in Kuru trading centre, which is about 300 metres away from the school to collect his clothes. 

However, Waibi is reported to have collapsed on the way and drowned in the running rain water on the Yumbe-Koboko road just a few metres to the trading centre.

Yahaya added that since the teacher was posted to the school this year, they were not privy to any underlying health conditions that might have caused Waibi's collapse, which led to his death.

He said their hope in ascertaining the cause of the collapse is in the outcomes of the postmortem.

Eulogised

Kuru Senior Secondary School headteacher Mizamil Munduga described Waibi's demise as a huge loss to the education fraternity in the district.

He said Waibi was committed, hardworking and a promising person that the school had a lot of hope in.

"The teacher has just stayed a few months with us at the school, but he proved to be the teacher we had been missing for many years," he said.

Munduga added that the deceased had started a business ideas incubator project at the school for the students as a way of fighting unemployment.

"It's a difficult moment [for us] because the teacher had the school at heart, loved the students and all the students loved him for his hard work. With his demise, we have lost a giant," he said.

Munduga added that the teacher had not yet accessed the Government payroll and had not been paid any salary by the Government.
