UNHCR donates sh12m sports kit to Aliguma Foundation

The Aliguma Foundation is looking forward to organizing one of the best Slum Soccer tournaments after the United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) once again chipped in with an assortment of sports items to help in the organization.

Founder Rita Aliguma recently received an assortment of items worth sh12m that included 16 sets of jerseys, 32 balls, 16 pairs of goalkeepers’ gloves from UNHCR Country Representative in Uganda, Joel Boutroue at their head offices in Kololo.

This was in addition to an assortment of tools that they received earlier in July from UNHCR to help them in upgrading and levelling their pitch but also in their agricultural project that they intend to start at their new home in Masindi.

“When I watched the last Slum Soccer tournament I was impressed not only by the organization but also with the spirit and energy exhibited at the tournament,” Boutroue said.”

“I was impressed and I decided that we should continue supporting the Aliguma Foundation.

“We primarily deal with refugees but this support is in solidarity with those who live in slums and those who suffer in conflict, the most vulnerable like those in the Acholi quarters where the tournament is organized,” Boutroue stated.

Rita Aliguma the founder thanked UNHCR for the continued support of the annual tournament that has been held since 2017.

“I’m excited and really appreciate the solidarity, support, and love that UNHCR has shown us and we thank them for their continued support,” Aliguma said.

“This support pushes us to another level and we hope to do more towards impacting lives of the most vulnerable in different communities through sports and enterprise,” Aliguma stated.

The Slum Soccer project under the Aliguma foundation was recently selected among 55 new children’s projects to be funded by the UEFA Foundation for Children, as they celebrated the World Children’s Day.

Over sh22b with be shared out with16 other African NGO’s like a new project or an extension of existing projects, in line with its mission to protect children’s fundamental rights in health and protection, children with disabilities, education and personal development, access to sport, integration of minorities, and protection for victims of conflicts.
