Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) in collaboration with Huawei Uganda has donated 20 laptops each to two secondary schools in the West Nile region.

The benefiting schools from the first phase of the donation worth over sh100m are Nyarilo Secondary School in Koboko district and St Peters’ College Warr Girls in Zombo district.

During the handover of the computers at St. Peters’ College Warr Girls on Thursday May 19, Ian Rumanyika, the acting Assistant Commissioner for Public and Corporate Affairs at URA, said that these computers will assist the beneficiaries to gain quality education through skilling the future generation in Information and Communication Technology (ICT) skills.

Rumanyika said the West Nile region has been of great interest to the tax body because it wants to empower the communities with relevant knowledge through use of ICT.

Dr Hatwib Mugasa, the executive director National Information Technology Authority Uganda (NITA-U) pledged to ensure network connectivity in the schools and entire region so as to ensure continuous learning for the students and other members of the community.

Ke Lei, an official from the Huawei Uganda who represented the managing director expressed their commitment in bringing digitalization to everybody in the society and applauded their fruitful partnership with URA and NITA-U in ensuring digital transformation.

George Okello, the Assistant Commissioner Legal in URA, commended the students especially the girl child for surviving the rampant teenage pregnancies and early marriages orchestrated during the COVID-19 lockdown that has taken many learners out of school saying ICT knowledge has become a necessity not a luxury.

URA through the school outreach program has pledged to work with the Ministry of Education and Huawei technologies in inculcating a tax-paying culture among the potential taxpayers.

Last year, other schools that benefited from the same program included Kololo SS in Kampala, St Theresa Girls’ schools in Hoima, Tororo Girls Secondary School, and Lira Secondary School among others.
