KASESE - A Uganda People's Defence Forces (UPDF) private and a juvenile have died following a road crash in Kasese district.

Private Fred Mawadri died on the spot when he lost control of his vehicle after running over Bira Linius, a four-year-old juvenile and resident of Nyamwamba West Acholi quarters in Kasese district.

Mawandri is attached to Rukoki Barracks under the Mountain Brigade in Kasese.

According to Faridah Nampiima, the spokesperson of the Police Traffic and Road Safety Directorate, the crash took place at Nyamwamba West cell, Nyamwamba division on Nyakasanga Road, at about 12:30pm and involved a UPDF vehicle reg no H4DF 2172 (Toyota Land Cruiser).

She said the juvenile was knocked down as he crossed the road at Nyakasanga.

"The vehicle then lost control, rammed into a house damaging it, while the soldier, who was seated behind the steering, died on the spot due to suspected falling debris from the house," she said in a statement on Monday.

The two bodies had by press time been conveyed to Kasese Hospital for postmortem examination.

She attributed the crash to speeding and careless crossing of the road by the juvenile.

"Investigations into the matter are underway," the statement added.
