BUSIA - It was a pleasant surprise when 12-year-old Sophie Auma won Sunday's 10km Rotary Club Cancer Run 2023 Busia edition.

Auma is a P5 pupil of Sibiyirise Primary School in Lumino-Majanji town council, Busia district.

In May, Auma won the national under-12 cross country held in Luwero district. Little Auma is sister to Uganda Prison's national sprinter Veronica Akumu.

Busia district Woman Member of Parliament Hellen Auma Wandera, who was the chief runner, at the event organised by Busia Rotary and Borderline Rotary clubs, rallied members of the business community at the border town to support the Rotary Cancer Run.

"Anyone of us or our close family members and friends can be cancer patients any time," Auma said and appealed to medics in the district to intensify awareness of cancer screening.

Busia Rotary Club president Geoffrey Wandera appealed to the residents to join the Rotary club noting that locally they have intervention in health education and environment among others.

He said over shillings one million was generated through the sale of running kits adding the objective of the run is to construct and purchase cancer equipment for Nsambia Hospital in Kampala.

Unlike last year, this year's Cancer Run attracted a handful of participants mainly Rotarians and Rotoractors.
