Netball returns to Nakivubo Stadium

In addition to the football pitch, Nakivubo Stadium boasts another cherished facility - the netball court, which holds sentimental memories for many. Netball enthusiasts rejoiced as plans for its reinstatement were unveiled.

Netball, once a prominent fixture at Nakivubo, fell silent during the stadium's reconstruction phase.

However, Hamis Kiggundu, the proprietor of Nakivubo, recognised the significance of preserving this tradition. Consequently, he ensured the inclusion of a modern netball court within the stadium premises.

Over the weekend, managers representing various netball clubs, united under the umbrella of the Uganda Netball Federation Clubs Association (UNFCA), embarked on a courtesy visit to Kiggundu. Their primary agenda: to inspect the newly constructed netball court and engage in fruitful discussions on enhancing the sport's prominence.

During the meeting, a lively exchange of ideas transpired between the club managers and Kiggundu, focusing on strategies to elevate the game, attract a broader fan base, and secure lucrative sponsorships. Kiggundu, emphasizing a long-term vision, urged the club managers to adopt an investment-oriented approach towards the sport, aiming for sustainability for both the clubs and the players.

Patrick Mutengesa, the president of UFCA, commended Kiggundu for his forward-thinking approach to sports development. 

"We extend our heartfelt appreciation to Kiggundu for his commitment to enhancing sports infrastructure. His insights as an investor are invaluable. Now, our focus shifts towards expanding the fan base to commercialize netball. By treating netball as a business venture, we can ensure the welfare of players and the longevity of the facility. Growing our fan base will undoubtedly mark a significant milestone," Mutengesa articulated.

Presently, netball operations fall under the purview of the normalization committee led by Moses Mwase, and stakeholders eagerly anticipate the resumption of league activities. With Nakivubo Stadium once again embracing netball, the stage is set for a thrilling resurgence of this beloved sport.
