At the 2024 African Games, weightlifter David Niyoyita clinched three medals, including two silver and one bronze.

These were Niyoyita’s first-ever medals, marking a significant achievement following his second participation in the African Games. His debut was in the 2019 in Rabat, Morocco.

Niyoyita who finished second overall in the 55kg category, attributes his remarkable success to hard work, emphasizing the tight training he underwent ahead of the games.

"During my preparation, I was focused on the upcoming world championships in Thailand, scheduled between March 31 and April 11. The dedication I poured into my training undoubtedly contributed to my strong performance," Niyoyita elaborated.

Head coach Khasim Nsubuga commended his team's exceptional performance, citing significant improvements in their overall execution.

"This outstanding performance is a result of our extensive preparation. We invested considerable time and effort in training, and I had full confidence in my athletes before we departed for Accra," Nsubuga remarked.

Despite being a senior four student at Kakungulu Memorial, Niyoyita maintains a delicate balance between academics and weightlifting.

"I prioritize my studies alongside rigorous training. Mornings are dedicated to training before school, and evenings are spent refining my skills. Staying committed to my goals keeps me motivated, even when exhaustion sets in," Niyoyita added.

With three medals secured at the All Africa Games, Niyoyita sets his sights on the upcoming Olympic qualifiers, particularly the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) World Cup slated from March 31 to May 11 in Phuket, Thailand.

"My ultimate aim is to secure a spot in the 2024 Paris Olympic Games. This upcoming qualifier represents my final opportunity, and I am determined to seize it," Niyoyita affirmed.

At the 2024 All Africa Games, the Weightlifting team comprised four athletes: David Niyoyita, Stephen Ojede, Aisha Namataka, and team captain Lydia Nakidde.
