How Rugby 7s national teams won Gold for Uganda in Accra
Uganda left Accra, Ghana with two gold medals from rugby sevens.
The men collected 18 points unbeaten from the six games they played.
They sealed the games with a 21-14 win against rivals Kenya.
A brace from Philip Wokorach and a try from Denis Etwau gave Uganda sweet revenge after they narrowly lost to their rivals 7-5 in the Montevideo Challenger event.
Philip Wokorach converted the three.
"It is great to be part of this team, with dedicated and disciplined individuals, winning gold is a great feeling," Timothy Mugisha said.
The gold in Accra as served a consolation tool to the men after burying their chances of qualifying for the 2025 HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series in Montevideo where they finished 6th with one round to go before the final qualifying tournament in Madrid.
Zimbabwe left with silver, while Kenya settled for bronze in the third place.
The Lady Rugby Cranes, in Accra, the players justified why their annual contracts with Nile Special are legit to them.
They also left the games village unbeaten, collecting all the 12 points from the four games they played.
Nothing was more loving than beating the would-be gold challenger Madagascar 29-00 in the final game of the day.
"This means a lot to Women rugby in Uganda, we are now being looked at equally with the men, and it is also paving the way for others to come." Captain Peace Lekuru explained.
From the Challengers Series in Montevideo, the Lady Rugby Cranes were on fine form after maintaining the fourth position.
Lydia Namabiro who put a woman of the games show is not worried why the team is performing this way.
"We have worked so hard for this performance, I am not worried about why we are performing this way right now," Namibiro said.
Madagascar settled for silver while Tunisia settled for bronze.
The women, with a chance of qualifying for the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series final qualifying tournament in Madrid after maintaining the fourth position, will be aiming for the same position when they head to Poland in the last Challenger event in mid-May this year.
