BUL FC might have ended KCCA's hopes of winning silverware this season after knocking them out of the Stanbic Uganda Cup 6-5 on penalties in a quarterfinal match played on Saturday at the FUFA Technical Centre Njeru.

Having endured a difficult start to the season in the Uganda Premier League, which left them in a difficult position to challenge for the title, the Uganda Cup was seen as their only hope of salvaging something at the end.

On the league table, KCCA is in sixth place, nine points behind leaders Kitara FC with seven matches left to finish the season.

KCCA defenders Peter Magambo and Herbert Achai both missed their spot kicks hitting the crossbar and BUL who missed only one through Jeremy Kirya of the seven penalties taken by each team advanced to the semifinals.

Before heading for penalties, both teams were locked at 1-1 after normal time and also extra time as well.

Alex Kitata scored for BUL in the ninth minute and Etienne Katenga leveled for KCCA four minutes later.

It was a physical game with the majority of the battles in midfield which resulted in few goal-scoring chances being created by either side.

Goalkeepers Tom Ikara of BUL and Anthony Emojong of KCCA had little work to do throughout the match.

Deep in the second half of extra time, KCCA players appealed to the referee Mashood Ssali for a penalty for what they thought was a handball by BUL's left-back Nicholas Mwere as he cleared the ball inside his box.

But Ssali dismissed the claims there and then and after their elimination, KCCA players and coaching staff blamed their defeat on this controversial call by the referee.

When it came to penalties, BUL withdrew Ikara and introduced Joel Mutakubwa in the sticks.

KCCA maintained Emojong, and during the shootout, he nearly saved Pascal Ngobi's penalty but he punched it to the crossbar and the ball bounced into the back of the net.

BUL players who scored their penalties are Ibrahim Kazindula, Ibrahim Mugulusi, Pascal Ngobi, Walters Ochola, Joel Mutakubwa, and Ronald Otti.

On KCCA's side, it was Joel Sserunjogi, Filbert Obenchan, Emmanuel Loki, Mustafa Kizza, and Mustafa Mujjuzi.

Pajule Lions also advanced to the semifinals after eliminating fellow northern Uganda regional side Pakwach Young Stars by 1-0 in Pader.

So far, three teams have confirmed their places in the semifinals, these are NEC who ejected Police on Wednesday, BUL, and Pajule Lions.

On Sunday, the set will be complete after Kitara and Vipers play each other at Masindi Stadium.
