Jimmy Akena elected new FMU president

Newly elected Federation of Motorsport Clubs of Uganda (FMU) president James Jimmy Akena has vowed to restore the sport's glory days.

“I am honoured that you have a lot of confidence in me to lead FMU,” Akena said in his acceptance speech after the elections held in Kampala on Wednesday.

He urged the members of the federation to embrace unity and work as a team for the betterment of the sport.

“We need to work as a unit to see that we are maintained as one of the sports in the top tier in funding as guided by the new sports law,” Akena confirmed.

The legislator garnered 57 votes to closest rival George Kagimu (16 votes) and John Burrows Lumu (1 vote) to become the next federation president replacing Dipu Ruparelia whose term came to end on February 3, but elections were not held leading to an extra-assembly on Wednesday.  

For the vice-president post, Hamidu Gombe beat Julius Sserunjogi after winning 55 votes against 19. 

Arthur Blick Jr bounced back as deputy vice-president in charge of motorcycling with 34 votes to George Ssemakula's 19 votes and Darbela Apolot's 11.

Reynold Kibira, Joshua Mayanja, and Jackson Sserwanga were unopposed for the post of General Secretary, deputy vice-president in charge of rallying, and Assistant Secretary respectively. 

Angella Ssemukuttu is the only female on the management committee after being elected unopposed for the post of deputy vice-president in charge vintage. 

Meanwhile, outgoing president Dipu Ruparelia declined to take up the position of the senate as per the constitution in his capacity as the immediate former president of the federation. 

“I am to stay as a club member of United Motorsports Club (UMOSPOC) and decline to assume the senate’s position,” he noted in his closing remarks as president.
