Kitende eliminated as Amus, St Juliana storm USSSA boys football finals

The Uganda Secondary Schools Sports Association (USSSA) will this time witness a new champion of the boys’ football showpiece after two newcomers stormed the finals of the event that has been ongoing for the last nine days and ends on Sunday in Masaka.

The new finalists are Amus College School who bounced back into the competition after winning a petition against Jinja Progressive that eliminated them 3-0 in the quarterfinals on Friday.

Amus, who had also been eliminated by Jinja SS on penalties in the round of 16, went through to meet record winners St Mary’s Kitende in today’s semifinals that was interrupted by torrential rains in Masaka.

And on a slippery ground at St Henry's College Kitovu, the two sides played to a 0-0 normal time draw before going for post match penalties, the longest in the history of this championship, with the Teso Champions winning 10-9.

The win for Amus aroused cheers and celebrations that were joined by fellow Teso zone side Ngora High as they drove through Masaka town.

Amus will now meet St Juliana who in the second semifinal eliminated Bukedea Comprehensive 4-2 on penalties following a 0-0 normal time draw again.

The two sides are reaching this championship’s final for the first time, meaning the championship that started in 1986 and was won by Kololo SS, but has since been dominated by Kitende and Kibuli, will now have a new winner in either Amus or St Juliana.

Defending champions and 11 time record winners St Mary’s Kitende will now vie for a bronze medal in a third play off against Bukedea, while St Julian that made it to the FEASSA games and co-hosts Amus will vie for their maiden gold medal in the finals Sunday.

The qualified school teams for the slots to FEASSA games that will be hosted at Bukedea Comprehensive and Amus, will be communicated later.
