The state minister for sports, Peter Ogwang, revealed during a motion for a resolution to pay tribute to Rebecca Cheptegei, that she was killed as a result of a property ownership dispute with her husband.

According to Ogwang, before her death, Cheptegei had confided in him about the challenges she was facing regarding ownership of property. The minister suggested that cultural norms, which often grant men authority over property regardless of actual ownership, were a key factor in the dispute.

"Members, we must denounce bad cultural practices that still persist in our society. We must also denounce domestic violence. The truth is, what killed her was the issue of property because some men believe they have ownership over their wives' money," he stated.

In the same session, Honourable Betty Chelain, Member of Parliament for Amudat District, urged men to focus on using their own resources rather than fighting for what does not belong to them.

"How can you burn a woman because of her money? I am requesting men to make good use of their own money or sweat. This message is not only for Kenyan men but for Ugandan men as well," she remarked.

Additionally, Honourable Julius Acon, Member of Parliament for Otuke East, suggested that the government should honour Cheptegei by building a stadium or at least constructing a road in her name. He also called for the government to assist in completing some of her unfinished projects and ensuring the welfare of her children.

“The late must have had some unfinished projects; I wish the government would step in to complete them and take care of her children,” added Honourable Mourine Osoru.

Cheptegei’s tragic death is a stark reminder of the struggles many female athletes face, including domestic violence and disputes over property. Her case mirrors that of Dorcus Inzikuru, a world steeplechase champion, who also endured domestic violence and similar struggles.
