Peace Lekuru has been handed the captaincy to lead the Lady Rugby Cranes in the Africa Women Rugby 7s at the University of Ghana in Accra on November 9 to 10.
The tournament doubles as the 2024 Rugby Challenger Series qualifiers. Uganda is set to face Zambia, Ivory Coast, and Senegal in Pool C of the two-day competition.
Qualifying for the Challenger Series is the top priority for coach Charles Onen's team, meaning each game is treated as a final. “We are ready, focused, and the girls are in high spirits with one target: accomplishing the mission of qualifying for the Challenger Series,” noted Lekuru.
Lekuru, a regular on the team and a seasoned skipper in international games, emphasized that any player selected by the coach is capable of handling the pressure.
Apart from the teams in Pool C, Kenya, South Africa, Tunisia, Mauritius, Burkina Faso, Zimbabwe, Madagascar, and hosts Ghana are the other countries targeting the two slots for the Challenger Series. The top two teams will qualify for the 2025 Challenger Series.
