As 2024 comes to an end, it has been a rollercoaster year for most of the Uganda National Federations from a sporting perspective.

The Uganda Athletics Federation will once again be recorded in the history books for their notable achievements this year. At the 2024 Paris Olympics, athletics made a huge mark as records were shattered.

Joshua Cheptegei won gold in the 10,000 meters, becoming the Olympic champion and setting a new Olympic record in the process.

Peruth Chemutai also became the first Ugandan female athlete to win back-to-back medals in any sport at the Olympics. She claimed silver in the women’s 3000 meters steeplechase event at the Paris Olympics.

The Federation of Uganda Football Association (FUFA) turned things around in the latter part of 2024 as Uganda Cranes qualified for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco after missing out twice consecutively.

The Uganda Netball Federation made a remarkable comeback, surviving extinction and electing a new executive. Their biggest highlight was the She Cranes winning bronze at the FAST5 Netball series in Christchurch, New Zealand, in November.

The new Uganda Netball Federation President, Joyceln Ucanda, is no stranger to the sport. Despite her experience and love for the sport, she knows challenges will come from every corner.

The She Cranes missed out on the 2024 Africa Netball Cup in Namibia after losing to South Africa in the finals. However, there were many positives and takeaways for Uganda to build on for big wins in 2025.

Meanwhile, the Uganda Cricket Association once again confirmed their appetite for both continental and international glory. The Victoria Pearls clinched the 2024 Kwibuka Women’s T20 title, and the Cricket Cranes enjoyed an impressive debut at the 2024 ICC Men’s T20 Cricket World Cup, co-hosted by the West Indies and the United States.

The Lady Rugby Cranes, on an upward trajectory, gave the Uganda Rugby Union something to smile about. They finished third at the 2024 Rugby Africa Women’s Sevens in Accra, booking their spot at the HSBC Challenger Series.

Their male counterparts, the Uganda Rugby Cranes 7s, emerged winners of the Africa Men’s 7s title for the fourth time in Mauritius.

In summary, it has been a memorable year for the aforementioned sports federations, while for others, it may be a year to forget.
