Former Wakiso Giants midfielder Ibrahim Kasule is living a true “zero to hero” dream.

Now in his third year with Major League Soccer side New York Red Bulls, the 22-year-old Ugandan is carving out a place for himself in the competitive world of American football.

Although currently sidelined with a thigh injury, Kasule reflects on a journey marked by resilience, ambition, and the enduring power of family support.

A Rising Star

Vision Sports caught up with Kasule at the Red Bulls’ state-of-the-art training facility in New Jersey, where he opened up about his experiences, both the challenges and the triumphs.

Back home, Kasule made a name for himself not only with Wakiso Giants but also through his standout performances in the Masaza Cup. He featured for teams including Buvuma, Butambala, Kyadondo, and Buddu—playing in the thrilling 2018/19 final, which Buddu lost to Ssingo in a dramatic 11-10 penalty shootout.

That season, he was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player, while Jude Ssemugabi took home the golden boot.

Life in the Big Apple

“Life hasn't been bad in the USA, except for being far from my family,” Kasule shared, with a hint of homesickness. “But I have a great support system at the club that keeps me going.”

That support goes beyond his teammates. Kasule credits the professionalism of the Red Bulls organization as a key factor in his adaptation. “Everything is done professionally here. I arrive one and a half hours before training to see the doctor and prepare. The standards are high, and I’ve learned to embrace that.”

A key figure in his transition has been Red Bulls assistant coach and Ugandan football legend Ibrahim Ssekagya. “He’s more than a coach—he’s like a parent to us. He’s helped us feel at home and understand the club’s system,” Kasule said.

Looking Ahead

Despite the frustration of his current injury, Kasule remains focused on the road ahead. “I want to recover and get back to helping the team. My goals include breaking into the first team, earning a spot on the national team, and hopefully making the final squad for AFCON in Morocco this December.”

Message to Aspiring Players

Kasule’s rise from local pitches to the international arena carries lessons for young Ugandan players. His message is grounded in values that have guided his journey.

“Put God first, work hard, and be resilient,” he advised. “Believe in yourself, pray, stay disciplined, and aim higher.”

The Pillars Behind the Player

The midfielder also credited his family as instrumental in his success, especially his stepfather and mother.

“My stepfather protected me from negative influences and loved the sport himself. That helped steer me in the right direction,” he said. “And my mother—she was my biggest supporter. She backed my dream all the way.”

As Kasule continues his rehabilitation, his story is a powerful reminder that success is not only about talent, but also about discipline, support, and belief. From Masaza Cup to Major League Soccer, his journey is a compelling testament to how far dreams—grounded in purpose—can travel.
